Presenting software: screen recording or motion design video?

A screen recording or an interface animated in motion design: what each does well to present software, and when to combine the two.

By the RayMotion team

To present software on video, two approaches often compete. The screen recording, a narrated capture of the screen, is made in an afternoon with a free tool. The motion design video, where the interface is recreated and animated, takes a few weeks. Both have their place, but not at the same point of the buying journey.

The screen recording: show the whole product, as it is

A screen recording shows the real product, for real, with the real cursor. It is the ideal tool for:

  • tutorials and help centres, where users want to repeat the exact gesture;
  • sales demos sent after a meeting, answering a precise question;
  • frequent updates, where a video must follow every new release.

Its limits: the screen is busy, the cursor hesitates, text is too small on a phone, and the video shows everything instead of what matters. It works for someone already looking for your product, much less for someone discovering it.

The motion design video: show what the product changes

In motion design, the interface is redrawn and animated. We remove the menus that do not matter, zoom on the area that does, slow down the key moment, and add diagrams that explain what happens behind the screen. It is the ideal tool for:

  • the home page and product pages, where visitors discover what you do;
  • a launch, on Product Hunt or LinkedIn, where you must hook people within seconds;
  • explaining a benefit, not just a click path: time saved, a mistake avoided.

Its limits: it takes a few weeks to produce and costs more than a screen recording. It should therefore show an idea that will not change with every product release.

A comparison

Screen recording Motion design video
For whom Someone who already knows the product Someone discovering it
What it shows The full journey, click by click The idea, and the action that matters
Readable on a phone Rarely Yes, it is designed for it
Updates Record again Replace one screen in the animation
Timing A few hours A few weeks

Combining the two

SaaS companies that present their product well often use both:

  1. a motion design video at the top of the site and at launch, that gets the idea across in a minute;
  2. screen recordings in the help centre and in sales emails, for those who want the detail.

That is what we did for NotionScheduler: the real interface, redrawn and animated at 60 frames per second, to show in 56 seconds the idea behind the whole product.

Good practice for an animated interface

  • Start from real screenshots: the interface stays recognisable for the user who will open it.
  • Simplify without lying: remove the clutter, never invent a feature.
  • One action per shot: one click, one result.
  • Text readable on a phone: enlarge the areas that matter.
  • Animate on the final screens: the script and storyboard get approved while the product settles.

In short

A screen recording shows the whole product to someone looking for it; a motion design video gets the idea across to someone discovering it. Start with the latter for your site and your launch, and keep the former for the help centre and sales. Our presentation video costs €2,250 excl. VAT, and our article on the SaaS launch video details how to adapt it.
